Install Your Pond

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to build your next pond, cheaply and easily:
Installation Guide

Step 1: Find the Right Location

Ideally you can find an area where that is both spacious and receives enough direct sunlight. It is helpful to use a rope, or paint to mark the area of the pond. The sun will allow plants to grow and flourish. Also, it makes for a great place to relax in the sun by your water feature! Be careful though, because too much sunlight can actually harm your fish and plants.

Step 2: Dig Your Hole

Nothing like getting your hands a little dirty! Now that you have your hole marked, it is time to excavate the dirt and make your hole. With a shovel, wheelbarrow, and a little elbow grease, this will be done in no time! You can dig your hole to your desired depth, just make sure you have enough liner to cover this. You can also dig two tiers, with the shallower one being used for plants, lily pads, and other decorative features.

Step 3: Install a Pond Skimmer and Pump*

Place your skimmer down and attach the pump to the skimmer. For specific information on how to do this, click here. *If you are just making a small watering hole, this step might optional. There are products you can use to clean your pond without large equipment.

Step 4: Lay Down the Underlayment and Liner

Nice job, you're almost there! Now that you have your hole dug and skimmer installed, it is time to put in your underlayment and liner. To determine the exact sized liner you need, check out our own pond size calculator! Be sure to leave some extra liner as an overhang around the sides.

Step 5: Add Rocks and Plants Around the Edges of the Liner

Not only will this be great for decoration, but this also adds crucial weight around the perimeter of the liner and covers the edges as well. This is where you get to add your creative touch on your water feature!

Step 6: Fill Your Pond with Water

The last step! See all your work come to fruition as you fill your pond with water. A few last touches can be adding plants and flowers, lily pads, fish, and bird feeders in and around your pond. Time to sit back, relax, and enjoy!
